FAQ- Frequently Asked Questions

What is a water-jet machine?
The water-jet is combination of water and garnet moving faster then the speed of sound that is combined with micro erosion and shear yielding of the material a narrow section is removes allowing for precise cuts (+/-.004 to +/-.006) and greater material yield. The cold, non-invasive process eliminates all concerns of burrs, dross, delaminating and heat or friction induced stress to metal or more delicate materials. With speed and accuracy, the water jet can cut materials up to 10” thick. The process is environmentally friendly, producing no harmful wastes, vapors, or dust. Water-jet cutting also produces exceptional edge quality and eliminates the need for secondary processing. With computer controlled cutting and multi-axis capabilities, water-jet cutting systems can produce complex cuts, shapes and contours with extreme precision every time.

What are the advantages of using the water-jet machine?
Fast, economical machining of virtually all metallic and non metallic materials assures accuracy and quality while reducing costs

Omni directional – Shapes and contours are cut using full capability of robotic manipulation
Cuts without heat - unlike cutting with flame, plasma, laser or stamping which produces heat affected zones and fatigue zones - there is no thermal distortion or degradation of materials
Physical and chemical characteristics of materials cut are unaffected
Usually no additional machining or secondary finishing required

Why water?
Do you enjoy the beauty of oceans, fast flowing rivers and water? These natural beauties are responsible for much of the large-scale erosion on our planet earth. Water-jet cutting is, in essence, a very aggressive yet controlled form of this same natural erosion process. Using extremely high water pressure mixed with an abrasive, the water-jet process will cut through any material.

Water-jet cutting had its beginning primarily in the aircraft industry, when the need arose to economically cut exotic alloys, laminates and composites. The ability of the water-jet process to cut any material into any shape with no heat affected zone or damage to the base material, opened the door for Watermark Design Technologies to offer services to a broad base of customers in every industry.
